Hepatitis refers to an inflammatory process of the liver parenchyma resulting from a wide spectrum of etiological factors including infectious toxic metabolic and autoimmune agents. Of particular clinical and epidemiological significance are the hepatotropic viruses-Hepatitis A B C D and E-which constitute a major global health burden. Although these viruses differ in their virological characteristics epidemiology and clinical outcomes they share the capacity to impair hepatic function and to induce both acute and chronic liver disease.
