<p><i>Lettres Écrites à un Provincial</i> (Letters Written to a Provincial) is a series of eighteen letters by Blaise Pascal published in 1656-1657 that attacked the Jesuit casuistry. The letters are written as if by a Parisian to a friend in the provinces and they are noted for their elegant style wit and biting satire. Pascal's work greatly influenced French prose and played a significant role in the ongoing conflict between Jansenists and Jesuits within the Catholic Church.</p> <p>These letters present a sharp critique of Jesuit moral theology particularly their use of casuistry which Pascal saw as a means to rationalize immoral behavior.
