<p><i>Lettres Persanes</i> (Persian Letters) by Charles-Louis de Secondat Baron de Montesquieu is a satirical epistolary novel that recounts the experiences of two Persian noblemen Usbek and Rica as they travel through France in the early 18th century. Through their letters to friends and family back in Persia Montesquieu offers a sharp critique of French society politics and religion.</p> <p>Usbek's letters also detail the increasingly chaotic situation in his harem back in Persia offering a glimpse into the complexities of power and desire.
