Liberal Arts Education in the United States of America

This book investigates a philosophy of highereducation which on a modern international scale occupies but a tinymicrocosm of the world's institutions of tertiary learning. Nevertheless liberal arts colleges uphold traditional values of education;therefore remain as one of the last survivors of classical teaching andlearning. Upon closer investigation the educational values ofthe ancient world experienced a rebirth in the modern university. First seen in Humboldt's Germany British institutions such asOxford and Cambridge adapted the German model for Englishpersonalities. Upon colonization of the New World both German andEnglish influences crossed the Atlantic to permeate theUnited States. Eventually the models of Oxford and Cambridge tookhold of America and spawned a new breed of higher education.
