The story follows the life of Amy Dorrit a young woman who was born and raised in the Marshalsea debtors prison in London where her father has been imprisoned for over two decades. The novel explores themes such as poverty imprisonment social injustice and bureaucracy. The story is set during the 1820s and 1830s and is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the reader to the Dorrit family and their life in the Marshalsea prison as well as a cast of other characters including Arthur Clennam a businessman who becomes involved in the Dorrits affairs and Mrs. Clennam Arthurs mother who is a cold and calculating woman.
