Little Philippe of Belgium by Madeline Brandeis is a captivating tale of a young boy named Philippe affectionately called the Brussels Sprout who lives on a farm near Brussels. Philippe is a dreamer always wishing for new adventures and longing for a baby sister which he believes will come from a cabbage in his garden. His wish comes true with the arrival of his sister Rose. As Philippe grows his dreams evolve from becoming a chef like his father to having grand adventures inspired by a film about the World War and Belgium's role in it. Philippe's life takes a turn when he meets a mysterious man named Tom and his daughter Zelie at the market. Tom suggests that Philippe and Rose join them in traveling and performing sparking Philippe's imagination. Although his parents refuse Philippe's longing for adventure remains. His chance comes when he meets two foreign gentlemen who invite him to Antwerp.
