About The Book
Description
Author
The story revolves around Julian West a young man from Boston who falls into a deep sleep in 1887 and wakes up in the year 2000. He finds himself in a dramatically transformed world where a new social and economic system known as Nationalism has been implemented. In this future society all industry and production are organized and controlled by the government in a centralized manner with the aim of providing for the needs of all citizens. The concept of private property has been abolished and wealth is distributed equally among the population. This new society is portrayed as a harmonious and classless utopia free from social strife and poverty. As Julian West adjusts to this new world he becomes an advocate for the benefits of the new system and engages in discussions and debates with other characters. Through these conversations the novel explores various aspects of the imagined society including its economic organization educational system and approach to gender relations. Looking Backward was a significant work in its time sparking discussions and debates about social reform and economic theories. It had a notable influence on the political and social movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The novels vision of a utopian future society provided a platform for exploring alternative social and economic systems and questioning the prevailing capitalist structures of the time.
