A major portion of the Lord of the Ring was written during World War II in separate phases from 1937 to 1949. Tolkien the writer of this novel started writing it as a sequel to the Hobbit a fantasy novel which he wrote in 1937. It eventually turned into a big work in itself. The name of this novel refers to the Dark Lord Sauron who is the main antagonist of the story. More than 150 million copies of this novel have been sold making it one of the bestselling novels ever written.The story in the Lord of the Rings revolves around the Dark Lord Sauron who wants to rule other Rings of Power and had forged the One Ring. Later on in a battle by an alliance of Men and Elves he was vanquished. Sauron lost his physical form when ruler of Men Isildur uses Sauron's finger to cut the One Ring. The Ring was lost at Gladden fields in the River Anduin after Isildur was killed by Orcs. This book was initially intended to be published in one volume but due to economic reasons it was divided into two volumes and published over a period of one year by the publisher.
