Loss Minimising Strategies in Parliament Interpreting
English

About The Book

The loss of some lexical material in simultaneous interpretation happens often. It can be reduced with preparation if a speech is provided well in advance or by following techniques described in the interpretation guides. Speeches to interpret are not always available well in advance. When working into English additional techniques can be used in order to reduce processing effort for example the „Plain English Campaign”. In the work lexical material loss minimising strategies are reviewed from selected theory aspects as well as examined from a publicly available and searchable repository (European Parliament). The theoretical aspects chosen are related to the relevance theory yet some important aspects for an interpretations’ clarity such as the phonetic aspects of interpreters’ work are omitted altogether. A study sample of performed nine simultaneous interpretations was chosen since it is in a readily available and searchable language corpus. Following theory and analyses some strategies for improving deliverance fidelity in the Latvian-English language pair interpretation at the European Parliament are proposed. There are three chapters conclusions and the thesis.
