The novel begins with four Westerners—British diplomat Hugh Conway his colleague Mallinson missionary Miss Brinklow and financier Henry Barnard—abruptly taken from a war-torn region in India to a mysterious Tibetan lamasery. Their plane crashes in the Himalayas where they are rescued and brought to Shangri-La a serene self-sustaining valley led by the enigmatic High Lama. Conway gradually learns that Shangri-La is a haven dedicated to preserving the cultural and intellectual achievements of humanity against the chaos of the outside world. The lamasery’s secret to longevity the harmony of its inhabitants and its detachment from modern life's turmoil enchant him. However Mallinson's growing frustration and desire to return to civilization create tension. Conway faces a profound dilemma: to embrace the timeless peace of Shangri-La or heed the pull of his past and obligations. The novel ends ambiguously leaving readers to ponder the choice he ultimately makes.
