The novel is presented as a series of letters written by Laura the protagonist to her friend Isabel. In the letters Laura describes her various romantic exploits including her elopement with a man named Edward who later dies of a fever and her marriage to a man named Sir Edward who turns out to be an abusive husband. The novel is known for its sharp wit and humorous style as well as its parody of the sentimental novels popular in Austen''s time. While it is not one of Austen''s major works Love and Friendship is still read today as a lighthearted and entertaining example of her writing style.
