Lovers' Vows is a comedy of manners and mistaken identity adapted by Mrs. Inchbald from August von Kotzebue's German play Das Kind der Liebe (The Child of Love). The play revolves around the entanglements of romantic relationships social class and the consequences of misunderstandings. The plot centers on a young woman Amelia who is in love with an aristocrat Sir William but is also pursued by the passionate and somewhat reckless Count Cassel. Amelia’s father the respectable baron is unaware of the true nature of his daughter’s love life and is eager to arrange her marriage to the wealthy but pompous Sir William whom he believes is the ideal suitor. The drama unfolds as various characters including Amelia’s maid her father and the two suitors become entangled in a web of lies and deceptions. Amelia’s secret love for Sir William is complicated by the presence of Count Cassel whose flirtations and manipulations further blur the lines between loyalty affection and deceit. Meanwhile a mysterious character the aging and noble Baron Wildenheim also plays a significant role in the development of the plot as the tangled emotions and social status of the characters converge. The plot is driven by the mix of mistaken identities and romantic misunderstandings leading to a series of comedic confrontations and resolutions.
