Welcome to the V Z h edition of Making

Connections: Readings in Relational

Communication. E is edition continues to rely on

the root metaphor of lenses perspectives through

which each of us can view and make sense of

our communication interactions and those we

observe in the world around us. My core belief is

that eT ective communication depends on knowledge

and skills that can be developed; it is not

an accident of birth. I also believe human beings

are more eT ective at understanding relationships

when they have multiple perspectives through

which to view interpersonal interactions. Finally

I believe multiple perspectives lead to alternative

ways of creating and sustaining ongoing relationships.

Relying on the research and insights of

many V ne scholars and teachers I have assembled

a timely and challenging set of perspectives on

relational communication. E is edition continues

to oT er a mix of theory and practice designed to

make clear the connection between communication

practices and the development of such significant

relationships as friends romantic partners

family members and colleagues.
