Sickle cell disease is a genetic hereditary disease affecting the red blood cells. It is an abnormality of the hemoglobin present in the red blood cells which in affected subjects is replaced by a hemoglobin called S or sickle cell. This hemoglobin is capable of deforming the red blood cell giving it a sickle-shaped appearance called sickle cell. This deformed red blood cell becomes unable to circulate in the small vessels; it slows down the oxygen supply in the body and is rapidly destroyed.
