Mandibular Movements

About The Book

Precise movement of the mandible by the musculature is required to move the teeth efficiently across each other during function. It is determined by the combined and simultaneous activities of both temporomandibular joints (TMJs). The TMJs cannot function entirely independently of each other and rarely function with identical concurrent movements. The TMJ is freely movable (diarthroidal) articulation. Also since the right and left condyle are part of same movable mandible the TMJ of one side cannot function without the movement of other joint. Hence it is known as interdependent joint. Each movement is coordinated to maximize function while minimizing damage to any structure. Precise movement of the mandible by musculature is required to move the teeth efficiently across each other during function. Knowledge of mandibular movement is essential to develop tooth forms for dental restorations understanding occlusion arranging artificial teeth treating TMJ disturbances preserving periodontal health and the designing selection and adjustment of articulators.
