The novel follows Roddy Maradick a 40-year-old man who finds himself facing a profound internal crisis. At forty he feels that life has passed him by and he yearns for a sense of renewal excitement and purpose. The story is set against the backdrop of a seaside town where Maradick goes for a holiday in an attempt to shake off the malaise of his life. During his time there he encounters a variety of characters who challenge his perceptions and push him toward a deeper understanding of himself. The holiday becomes a period of transition as Maradick grapples with feelings of frustration nostalgia and the desire for a second chance at happiness.
