Hungary of that time (1868-1914) resorted to a decisive offensive organizing a violent Magyarization of non-Hungarian ethnic groups using for this purpose including the Church. In 1912 the Hungarian Greek Catholic bishopric for Magyarization was established based in Hajdúborodóg under conditions that Greek Catholicism is not a traditional Hungarian religion. Some 350000 Hungarians Greek Catholics in Hungary today historically speaking are former Orthodox non-Hungarians but Ruthenians and Romanians who were Magyarized by non-Orthodox means that is through the Greek Catholic Church.
