However their love is not to be as Maries father is determined to prevent the marriage of his daughter to a poor artist. Vladimir is forced to confront the reality of his situation and the impossibility of his love and the story ends tragically. Marie is considered one of Pushkins most beautiful and poignant works. The story explores themes of love passion and social class as well as the struggle of the individual against societal expectations and constraints.
