The narrative begins in the small village of Artigat in the French Pyrenees where Martin Guerre a peasant marries Bertrande de Rols. Their life together is initially idyllic but after several years Martin leaves for war and is presumed dead. During his absence Bertrande although initially mournful is left in a difficult position as a woman without a husband in a society that places great emphasis on marital ties. After some years a man claiming to be Martin Guerre returns to the village. He appears to have the same physical characteristics and knows intimate details about Martin's life which convinces Bertrande and many villagers of his authenticity. She accepts him back and they resume their life together. However as time goes on suspicions arise regarding the man's true identity. The real Martin Guerre is eventually discovered to have returned alive and begins to confront the impostor. The case escalates into a sensational trial that captivates the local community exploring themes of love loyalty and the nature of identity.
