Max von Oppenheim

Max von Oppenheim was a German lawyer diplomat ancient historian and archaeologist who lived during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was born into the Oppenheim family a prominent German Jewish banking dynasty. Oppenheim was a keen amateur archaeologist and ethnologist. He left his career as a diplomat and went on to discover the site of Tell Halaf in Syria. The excavations he conducted there marked an important contribution to the knowledge of the ancient Middle East.
