In 2000 former Surgeon General David Satcher released Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General which highlighted the importance of oral health as the gateway to general health and well-being. Oral disease is a silent problem proper oral health is vital to a productive and healthy life. By understanding the risk factors associated with systemic diseases we are able to improve the quality of our increasing longevity and reduce the burden of disease for current and future generations.
