Muriel Sukumaran gives a clear and accessible history of man's co-existence with micmbes since the beginning of civilization. Her story features many of the most feared diseases that have plagued humankind many of which still attack populations all over the world I particularly appreciate her highlighting the fight that civilization has fought against the polio virus. This virus paralyzes its victims leaving lifelong effects with no cure. Rotary International began its battle against the polio virus in 1979 with the vaccination of six million children in the Philippines as part of Its Health Hunger and Humanity program. That project grew Into a decades-long effort to eradicate pollo from the world an effort spearheaded by Rotary International and shared today with The World Health Organization UNICEF the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation various other organizations and the governments of the world. Since 1985 when polio thrived in over 125 countries. the global polio case count has decreased by 99% and only three countries remain polio-endemic. Ms. Sukumaran clearly shares Rotary's vision of a polie-free world. Her representation of the polio virus as plotting against humankind refusing to give up feels accurate as is her declaration that we will fight until the disease is gone. We heartily appreciate her doing her part to spread the word about the urgent need to finish the job of eradicating polio.
