Agriculture is a key sector in Morocco accounting for 14.5% of GDP 110 billion dirhams of agricultural gross domestic product in 2015 and 40% of national employment. Nevertheless the agricultural sector is dependent on a number of exogenous factors such as rainfall and temperature which remain the main factors directly affecting crop yields. Growth remains volatile with production falling by 9% in 2012 and rising by 19% the following year (2013). To deal with these factors the agricultural sector has been supported since 2008 by the Green Morocco Plan a strategy presented to HM King Mohammed VI the aim of which is to make agriculture the main driver of growth in the national economy by 2020. The challenges of the Green Morocco Plan are economic (GDP and growth agro-industry trade balance State budget) and social (regional development sustainable development consumption).
