Mind and MetaphorUnderstanding the human mind is impossible without considering the role of metaphor. Metaphor is not merely a literary device but a fundamental tool for thought language cognition and even experience. The human mind constantly relies on metaphor to comprehend complex abstract or unfamiliar concepts. This is because many of the notions we encounter in everyday life as well as in science and philosophy are not tangible or directly observable. Metaphor serves as a cognitive bridge between two conceptual domains: the source domain which is usually familiar concrete and imageable and the target domain which is often more abstract complex or unknown. The features of the source domain are systematically mapped onto the target domain to facilitate understanding. In metaphors such as his heart is stone the word stone conveys characteristics like hardness coldness and lack of emotion which are transferred to heart-the symbolic center of feelings and emotions. Through this metaphorical mapping the listener easily grasps the notion of cruelty or emotional indifference.
