The author havingmade numerous enquiries intothe Missionary Statistics of different parts of the country; and havingread much concerning the progress of the gospel in TanjoreTinnevellyand Travancore left Calcutta at the close of 1852 in order personallyto visit these localities whose names have become so well knowntochristian church at large.His tour through the Presidency of Madrasoccupied the first three months of 1853. On his return to Calcuttahe delivered a short course of lectures on the history conditionandprospects of these various Missions. In publishing these lectures the authordesires earnestly to encourage the Church of Christ from a sight of attained success to pray and labourmore earnestly for that which yet remains.
