Modern Festivals and Fairs

Yucatan throughout time has gone through various historical processes from the Conquest to the present day it is a state with a great variety of traditions. Among these are the festivals and fairs that make up the festive calendar of Yucatan. Thus the patron saint festivals were consolidated as a bastion of popular religiosity. The cultural and religious experience of these festivities is a mixture of a series of sacred and ludic elements in which in the same space and time all the interested parties coexist and participate without being differentiated by their social condition. In each of the towns a sacred image is venerated known as the Patron Saint to whom the people together with the local church authorities organize a festival in his honor as a symbol of respect and devotion such as the feast of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception of Izamal.
