Edgar Allan Poe an American author and critic who lived in the 19th century wrote the Gothic horror short story Morella.</br></br> The unnamed narrator marries Morella a woman with extensive academic training who explores the works of German philosophers Fichte and Schelling in order to address the issue of identity. While lying in bed Morella reads and teaches her husband. Seeing her physical decline her husband the narrator grows afraid and desires for his wifes death and eternal peace. Eventually Morella dies in childbirth proclaiming: I am dying. But within me is a pledge of that affection... which thou didst feel for me Morella. And when my spirit departs shall the child live.
