The major purpose of this study was to explore factors affecting the motivation of trainees in communication course session in the specified area of the study. When trying to explain any success or failure in English language learning the term motivation is often used by either teachers or students. Indeed it is one of the key learner factors that determine the rate of success. Without sufficient motivation even individuals with the most remarkable abilities cannot accomplish long- term goals in learning a foreign language. The study was conducted in order to collect information regarding the issue of motivation within the context of ESP. Data collection was done through four instruments of research: a students’ questionnaire completed by the 39 trainees a classroom observation a semi-structured interview for five trainees and three lecturers and document analysis. Mixed type research method was employed. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were proceeded to in order to have insights into Level II ICT Department trainees’ motivation in learning Receiving and Responding to Workplace Communication course at Major General Mulugeta Buli Defense University College.
