Mr Tompkins

Mr. Tompkins is a series of popular science books written by physicist George Gamow in the 1930s and 1940s. The books use fictional stories and characters to explain complex scientific concepts in an accessible way. The main character of the series is Mr. Tompkins an average man with a keen interest in science. In each book he embarks on a series of adventures that take him to different parts of the universe and through different scientific theories and concepts. The first book in the series Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland follows Mr. Tompkins as he dreams of a world where the speed of light is much slower than in our own universe. This allows him to witness strange and fascinating phenomena such as watching the stars move across the sky in minutes and seeing the curvature of space-time. Other books in the series include Mr. Tompkins Explores the Atom in which Mr. Tompkins explores the world of quantum mechanics and atomic physics and Mr. Tompkins Learns the Facts of Life in which he learns about genetics and evolution.
