Multiliteracies: Lit Learning

About The Book

Multiliteracies considers the future of literacy teaching in the context of the rapidly changing English language. Questions are raised about what constitutes appropriate literacy teaching in today's world: a world that is both a global village yet one which local diversity is increasingly important.

This is a coherent and accessible overview of the work of the New London Group, with well-known international contributors bringing together their varying national experiences and differences of theoretical and political emphasis. The essays deal with issues such as:

the fundamental premises of literacy pedagogy

the effects of technological change

multilingualism and cultual diversity

social futures and their implications on language teaching.

The book concludes with case studies of attempts to put the theories into practice and thereby provides a basis for dialogue with fellow educators around the world.
Part 1 Introduction; introduction1 Introduction, Bill Cope, Mary Kalantzis; Chapter 1 A Pedagogy Of Multiliteracies; Part 2 Changing Times; introduction2 Introduction; Chapter 2 New People In New Worlds, James Paul Gee; Chapter 3 Cyber-Schooling And Technological Change, Carmen Luke; Chapter 4 Multiliteracies and Multilingualism, Joseph Lo Bianco; Chapter 5 History, Cultural Diversity and English Language Teaching, Martin Nakata; Chapter 6 Changing the Role of Schools, Mary Kalantzis, Bill Cope; Part 3 Designs of Meaning; introduction3 Introduction; Chapter 7 Design and Transformation, Gunther Kress; Chapter 8 Multiliteracies and Language, Norman Fairclough; Chapter 9 Multimodality, Gunther Kress; Chapter 10 Designs For Social Futures, Bill Cope, Mary Kalantzis; Part 4 Pedagogy; introduction4 Introduction; Chapter 11 A Multilteracies Pedagogy, Mary Kalantzis, Bill Cope; Chapter 12 Taking Cultural Differences Into Account, Courtney B.
