Sixty-six cases were studied. Women accounted for 71.2% of cases. The average age at the time of consultation was 43 with 22 years' professional seniority. The carrying of heavy loads was reported by 83% of patients. Degenerative disorders of the lumbar spine accounted for 46% of requests for an opinion of fitness. Musculoskeletal disorders were the cause of sick leave of more than 15 days over a one-year period preceding the occupational medicine consultation for 31.8% of workers. A work-related accident was noted in the antecedents of 43.9% of employees. Avoidance of carrying heavy loads was indicated for 53% of workers alternating postures for 21.2% and avoidance of going up and down stairs for 19.6%. All workers were trained in handling rules.
