Musical aspects of Russian neoclassicism

This book provides inspiration for conductors seeking to interpret works as closely as possible to the composer's intentions. The focus is on musical aspects of Russian neoclassicism with particular emphasis on the harmony melody and instrumentation of this style. The specificity of these compositional techniques is illustrated using examples from works by Sergei Prokofiev and through comparisons with Dmitri Shostakovich and Igor Stravinsky. In addition the influence of Russian folk music on their work is examined in detail. The work is rounded off by placing it in its historical context.
