Banana is a long duration crop of about one and a half years. Edible triploid bananas are vegetatively propagated by suckers as viable seeds are generally not produced. In Musa sp. in vitro mutagenesis provides the necessary tool for the development of new clones with broadened genetic base by altering one or a few characteristics of a generally acceptable cultivar for resistant to diseases and also possessing other desirable agronomic traits like early bearing short stature (less wind damage and suitable for high density planting) high yielding etc. and retaining original genotype unchanged. Mutation induction using physical as well as chemical mutagens is useful for the induction of genetic variability. Physical mutagens such as gamma ray are tools for enhancing and generating genetic variation by inducing mutations at the gene chromosome and genome levels in nuclear and cytoplasmic organelle DNA.
