Matilda Lee was born at Stratford Hall to Philip and Elizabeth Steptoe Lee. Here she enjoyed a delightful childhood she was schooled in dance music reading writing math and learned several languages she was the apple of her father's eye her life changed suddenly when her father died. She found herself to be the heir of a large plantation becoming a wife and mother herself after the Revolutionary War.
