Van Wyck Brooks praised Luther Standing Bear's autobiographical narrative of his tribe and tribesmen as one of the most interesting and veracious we have ever had when it was first published in 1928. One of the earliest works on Indians written from an Indian perspective by an Indian it continues to be a milestone in Indian literature. Standing Bear a Lakota chief's son who was born in the 1860s participated in the first Carlisle Indian School class saw the Pine Ridge Reservation uprising known as the Ghost Dance toured Europe with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and devoted his later years to the Indian rights movement of the 1920s and 1930s.
