Names That Count: The Cultural Calculus of Naming in India

This paper investigates the deep-rooted connection between personal names and societal consciousness in India specifically focusing on the widespread presence of “mathematical names” across the subcontinent. The authors propose that the persistence of such names reflects the enduring legacy of India’s rich mathematical heritage. To establish this link the paper begins by outlining key contributions of Indian mathematicians in six domains: geometry trigonometry numeration arithmetic algebra and Vedic mathematics. These mathematical concepts often drawn from classical texts are shown to have influenced contemporary naming practices.Using a comprehensive dataset of university student names along with entries from Facebook and LinkedIn the study combines qualitative and quantitative methods to demonstrate the real-world occurrence of these mathematical names in modern India.
