Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) led a remarkable life. He was a passionate abolitionist newspaper editor eloquent orator former slave and talented writer. His early years were marked by physical abuse poverty and sorrow yet he overcame these challenges to establish himself as a strong representative of his people. Douglass gives explicit accounts of his early years and dreadful experiences as a slave in this the earliest and most widely read of his three autobiographies. He also includes a heartbreaking account of his daring escape to the North and eventual liberation.The Narrative which was published in 1845 to allay scepticism regarding his ancestry and since few slaves at the time could write is still acclaimed today for its tremendous emotion sensitive and vivid descriptions and storytelling prowess. Anybody interested in African-American history or the life of one of the nation's most valiant and significant civil rights advocates should have a copy of it in their library.
