Nonetheless the number and severity of associated complications are still of clinical concern with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) being a serious complication after hip and knee replacement surgery. The design and implementation of surgery as well as the overall diagnosis and treatment of postoperative infectious complications material failure prosthetic loosening joint instability etc. have been the subject of intensive research to understand prevent and treat the associated diseases.
