<p>The New York Fire Department (FDNY) is the country´s largest. It has an all hazards approach which includes medical emergencies and rescue operations.</p><p>It is known for its extensive emergency response including a massive emergency medical service (EMS) system and special units and its use of advanced technology. FDNY responds to a vast range of emergencies not just fires. Its responsibilities include technical rescue hazardous materials mitigation and medical calls.</p><p>The FDNY employs over 11000 uniformed firefighting employees 4500 uniformed EMTs paramedics and EMS employees and 2000 civilian employees</p><p>The department uses modern technology like drones laser methane detectors and advanced training facilities like subway cars for exercises. Members are nicknamed New York's Bravest reflecting a deep sense of tradition and duty.</p><p>Some will remember the heart-breaking footage of FDNY fire fighters moving up the stairs of the Twin Towers against the stream of people moving down to escape on 9/11 2001 only to be crushed when the World Trade Center buildings collapsed.</p><p>The department also engages in public education and code enforcement to prevent emergencies. </p>
