The book tells the story of a young woman named Flora who finds herself in a difficult situation after her father dies and leaves her with little money. She is forced to move in with her aunt and uncle who are not particularly fond of her. Flora's aunt and uncle try to marry her off to a wealthy man but Flora is not interested in him. Instead she falls in love with a poor artist named Harry who is not considered quite the thing by her family. Despite the disapproval of her family Flora and Harry continue their relationship and face many obstacles along the way.
