In Not Snow Nor Rain deFord imagines a future where the world has become reliant on a system of automated technology for mail delivery and communication. The title alludes to the famous motto of the United States Postal Service “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” However in this futuristic world the couriers are no longer human; instead they are robots. The plot follows a disruption in this seemingly perfect automated postal system. When the system suddenly fails chaos ensues as society grapples with the consequences of their overdependence on technology. Amid the technological failure the characters must confront their reliance on machines and find ways to adapt.
