<p><span style=color: rgba(29 29 29 1); background-color: rgba(255 255 255 1)>An HMSO publication prepared for the British Army offensive on the Somme in 1916 and the advance through the German rear areas designed to give vital knowledge of the topography including woods canals roads river and canal crossings warnings to probable German defences such as mining of roads inundations of canals and rivers formidable obstacles to the movement of infantry and objectives for the successful attack on German-held towns.</span></p><p></p><p><span style=color: rgba(29 29 29 1); background-color: rgba(255 255 255 1)>The notes also cover in a tabulated list habitations with details e.g. Longueval consisted of 130 houses with 406 inhabitants eight wells 17 ponds and a sugar factory.</span></p><p></p><p><span style=color: rgba(29 29 29 1); background-color: rgba(255 255 255 1)>The 1:100000 scale map shows the whole of the Somme Front from Arras south to St. Quentin and east to Cambrai with both British and German front lines at the commencement of the offensive with various German headquarters railheads depots etc. </span></p><p></p>
