Few who know the fine old quarto '' Dcemonologia Sacra '' of DrGilpin will disi^ute its right to a place of honour in the Series of laterPuritan Divines. It will befound—as an early writer says of another—'' mattcr-fuU'' and neverthelesssuggestive rather than exhaustive—that is you have manyrich lodes of the ore of thought opened but many others incUcatednot worked ; clear and keen of insight into the deepest places of thedeepest things discussed ; wide in its out-look yet concentrated in itsin-look ; sagacious and wise in its general conclusions and passionateas compassionate in its warnings remonstrances and counsels ; fuU offaith in all ''written'' in The Word and i^atheticaUy credulous inaccepting testimony when a given fact (alleged) is fitted to barban appeal ; curious and quaint in its lore ; intense and anxious in itstrackings of sin without and within; pre-Kaphaelite in the vividfidelity of its portrayals of satanic guiles and guises that are alwaysdisguises ; and above all tenderly ex2oerimental in its consolation tothe tried and troubled. The third part is an exposition of the Temptationof our Lord which may bear comparison for thoroughness andpower with any extant.
