About The Book

I am a little child picking up pebbles on a sea shore like a child but a large ocean of learning is unexplored before me. I attempted to put a drop of water in the ocean through this book on the theme of multiculturalism. There are a few prominent diasporic writers in Indian English literature and Bharti Mukherjee and Kiran Desai are such personalities who proved their mettle as novelists in the realm of Indian English literature. Both the prolific and gifted women novelists are the epitome of cultural conflict. Kiran Desai brought forward her literary legacy from her novelist mother Anita Desai. She is the winner of Indian Booker Prize for the fiction The Inheritance of Loss. In almost all the fictions they selected the major theme of multiculturalism globalization and immigrant experience. This book titled Bharti Mukherjee and Kiran Desai: A Comparative Study of Multiculturalism attempts to delve into the depth of the aspects of multiculturalism. In all the novels they have the characters from the middle class needy family. They are trapped in the mess of different cultures to earn their livelihood and to sustain in this material world. They have to struggle to meet their needs anyhow. The theme of cross-cultural conflict expounded in this book is based on these novels- The Tiger’s Daughter Wife Jasmine and Desirable Daughters by Bharti Mukherjee; The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. These are the major novels which have the theme of multiculturalism to a great extent. So I have tried to take out the gist of multiculturalism of some major novels of both the novelists.
