Nursing care for diabetic patients

Diabetes Mellitus is a heterogeneous group of metabolic disorders that have hyperglycaemia in common type I and type II the latter being the most frequent form of the disease affecting 90% of all cases of Diabetes Mellitus. Men in general suffer more from severe and chronic illnesses when compared to women so measures focused on health education have been implemented to raise awareness of changes in risk behaviour and the importance of self-care in order to increase the life expectancy of this population. The participation of health professionals in caring for diabetic patients is essential. Nursing can articulate intervention actions by identifying the reality in which patients are inserted using the Systematisation of Nursing Care as a facilitating element in care planning.
