Preeclampsia (PE) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and the most important causes of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide in developing countries such as those in Latin America and the Caribbean is the leading cause of maternal death (> 25%). 50000 women worldwide are estimated to die annually from preeclampsia. The World Health Organization reports that every seven minutes a woman dies from this cause. In Mexico according to the Ministry of Health preeclampsia accounts for up to 34% of all maternal deaths making it the leading cause of death associated with pregnancy complications. Within the maternal health care in our country the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) plays a fundamental role since 50% of all hospital births are attended in its medical facilities.
