About The Book

The narrative revolves around the mysterious death of Captain John Gunner in a Southampton boarding house the Excelsior owned by the formidable Mrs. Pickett. The case is initially investigated by Elliot Oakes a young detective from Mr. Paul Snyder's agency who is eager to prove his deductive prowess. Despite the locked-room scenario Oakes concludes that Gunner was killed by a cobra that had escaped from a crate of bananas sent from Java a theory supported by the discovery of a dead dog in the yard also killed by snake venom. However Mrs. Pickett dissatisfied with Oakes' conclusion invites Mr. Snyder to dinner where she reveals her own investigation. She accuses Captain Muller Gunner's roommate of murder explaining that Muller used a cat with poisoned claws to attack Gunner knowing the cat's aversion to the sound of Gunner's harmonica. The revelation is confirmed when Muller confronted with the evidence confesses to the crime. The story highlights the contrast between Oakes' reliance on logical deduction and Mrs. Pickett's intuitive understanding of human nature ultimately leading to the resolution of the case.
