Odontogenic inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region occupy a significant place in surgical dentistry. Among them the most common are acute and chronic periodontitis exacerbation of chronic periodontitis acute purulent periostitis of the jaw acute osteomyelitis of the jaw abscess phlegmon lymphadenitis. Lymph nodes and phlegmons sometimes develop in the maxillofacial region the source of which are tonsillogenic rhinogenic otogenic and other foci of infection. The absence of a generally accepted classification of inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region of odontogenic origin for a long time and significant disagreements in the interpretation of their manifestations created certain difficulties for diagnosis and treatment. There are three main scientific views on the classification of these diseases which have not lost their significance to this day since there is still no single point of view on this issue.
