<p>Despite its relatively young history the short narrative or afsaana is one of the most important literary subgenres in Urdu literature. Wajida Tabassum was a well-known and popular short story writer of her time. The well-known literary and film journal Shama used to publish incisive and contentious short stories about prostitutes and the conditions of the red light areas. According to Wajida Tabassum the most persecuted members of our society are prostitutes. How many authors have written before me on this immensely unpleasant heated and cutting subject? It is peculiar that writing about a woman by a male is not viewed as offensive. Additionally a woman is referred to as a pornographer if she writes about prostitutes or brothels. I received a ton of criticism when I wrote these stories.</p><p>/</p><p>واجدہ تبسم اپنے دور کی معروف و مقبول افسانہ نگار رہی ہیں۔ ایک زمانے میں مقبول عام فلمی و ادبی رسالہ شمع میں ان کی ایسی تیکھی اور متنازعہ قسم کی کہانیاں شائع ہوئیں جو طوائف اور بازارِ حسن کے ماحول پر لکھی گئی تھیں۔ واجدہ تبسم کہتی ہیں کہ: طوائفیں ہمارے معاشرے کی بڑی مظلوم مخلوق ہیں۔ مجھ سے پہلے بھی جانے کتنے لکھنے والوں نے اس بےپناہ تیز، حد درجہ گرم اور ناقابل یقین حد تک دردناک موضوع پر قلم اٹھایا ہے ۔۔ یہ عجیب و غریب بات ہے کہ ایک مرد، عورت پر کچھ لکھے تو اسے قابل اعتراض نہیں گردانا جاتا۔ اور عورت، ایک عورت پر لکھے تو فحش نگار جیسے خطاب سے نوازا جاتا ہے۔ میں نے یہ کہانیاں لکھی تھیں تو مجھ پر اعتراضات کی باڑھ آ گئی تھی۔</p>
