O Captain My Captain is a dramatic poetic and gorgeously illustrated book that relates the story of one of America's finest poets and how he was influenced by one of the country's greatest leaders. During the Civil War Whitman and Lincoln appeared together on the National stage in Washington DC. Whitman frequently passed Lincoln's carriage on the road despite the fact that the two men never met. Lincoln's grace under pressure was a recurring theme in Whitman's poetry and the poet was seldom far from the President. Whitman saw Lincoln's second inauguration and lamented with the rest of the country as his burial train made its way to his final resting place.
